Antibiotics*
- for the treatment of bacterial infections.
Some brands have been licensed specifically for use in pigeons - Vetremox, Ornicure. The majority have not and are therefore used off the product data sheet (they are used at the owners risk). I only use antibiotics that I have found to be of benefit and at the dosage rates supplied with the product. Mixing different antibiotics could be detrimental to your birds and to the effectiveness of the products. This is because some products are neutral in solution, some are alkaline and others are acidic. Yet other products may be on an alcohol carrier. One of the commonest signs of problems is the formation of precipitates or other insoluble compounds. The following additional antibiotics have been listed -Aureomycin, Baytril, Linco-spectin, Octacillin and Tylan.
Anticoccidials*
- for the treatment of coccidiosis
Baycox 2.5% is a thick clear liquid which is specifically for the treatment of coccidiosis. It does not have a license for pigeons. Dosage - 2.8ml per litre of drinking water for two consecutive days. I would recommend using this two weeks before racing
Coxi Plus is a white powder containing the sulphur drug (sulphadimethoxine sodium). This product is specifically licensed for pigeons. Dosage - 1 sachet in 2 litres water for 5 consecutive days.
Anthelmintics*
- for the treatment of worms
Solubenol is a white emulsion containing flubendazole. It is added to the drinking water to treat adult round worms and hair worms. DO NOT USE WHEN THE BIRDS ARE MOULTING. Dosage - 0.2ml in 1 litre of water for 7 days.
TopEctoparasiticides*
- for the treatment of mites and lice
Ivermectin 1.0% 7 ml spot on in a dropper bottle. Put one drop on the skin at the base of the neck once a week for three consecutive weeks. I have no evidence to suggest that this will also worm your birds.
Pro-Tex® Pigeons 50 tablets

PHC Citrus extract 200 ml
A concentrated natural extract from citrus fruits containing flavanoids. Flavanoids are a group of natural water soluble plant chemicals that can be divided into 4 groups - flavanones, flavones, flavonols and anthcoyanins. They are natures natural antioxidants. Current research reports beneficial effects by preventing DNA damage, damage to blood vessels, damage to blood fats, reducing inflammatory signs and possibly activity against some fungal and viral infections. Currently, benefits have been seen when using the day after the return from a race and as a regular tonic for young birds when they have been separated as an aid to coping with "Young Bird Sickness". Usage: add 1 to 5ml to 5 litres of drinking water. Give up to three times weekly.
